The volleyball team at Pacelli High in Stevens Point, WI was thrilled to be part of a day long seminar given by Peter Ferrito. The seminar focused on several aspects of what a team requires throughout the year, such as leadership, focus, communication, and perseverance.
Peter made the 24 girls involved (sophomores, juniors, seniors) feel immediately at ease with each other and with him through a series of trust-building activities. These activities were both fun and necessary to lay the ground work for upcoming group work. Peter had everything organized and ready to go for the team. They responded very will, especially because this was conducted in August when they were still in summer mode.
One of the most impressive parts of the day included personal interviews. Each player interviewed as many other players as possible. The interviews gave the girls a chance to get to know each other better than they had before and, most importantly, gave them a chance to profess out loud their goals for the upcoming season. What impressed me both with the activity and with Peter was the leadership of the girls and the ability of Peter to give the girls the ownership of the team. He continually stressed that this was their team, not his or mine, and it would ultimately be up to them to create a winning season and achieve their goals.
Each participant received a handbook that was used throughout the day and referred to many times. The handbook was an invaluable tool for me throughout the season and also gave me a format to assess the season upon completion.
On a personal note, I have known Peter for many, many years. He endured many life changes throughout his years and has always maintained the most positive of attitudes. His work with students from many different aspects of school life shows his strong commitment to the youth of today. I was most impressed with his giving of himself during this seminar. The girls left that day knowing that they had the ability to create a true team.
